New Tampa is a suburb of Tampa to the NorthEast of downtown Tampa and is one of the fastest growing "communities" in Hillsborough County. It all started in 1985 when Tampa Palms developers asked the City to annex its development to the City of Tampa. Not long after Hunter's Green developers also asked to be annexed to the City of Tampa - these two communities would become the largest new residential annexation in 100 years according to the New Tampa Community Council ("NTCC"). Tampa Palms began selling homes in 1987 and Hunter's Green followed suit in 1989. Bruce B. Downs, originally called "the road to nowhere", now it is the main thoroughfare for New Tampa. In 1995, the New Tampa zip code, 33647, was ranked in the Top Ten in the U.S. for fastest growing upscale communities. By the year 2013, one third of Hillsborough County's residents will reside in New Tampa.
Since New Tampa is not incorporated and merely an annex to the City of Tampa, there are no hard and fast boundary lines. According to the NTCC, the original imaginary boundary of New Tampa was north of Fletcher to the County Line and west to 275 and east to 75. Today some consider the southern border to be Fowler (to include USF) and north into Pasco County to Highway 54. Southern Pasco County is currently one of the fastest growing counties in Florida. New Tampa - Hillsborough County continues to thrive and grow with mature communities, nearing close-out newer communities and brand-new up and coming communities. There are many communities in New Tampa - Pasco County as well. While New Tampa is certainly the largest and fasted growing "community", there are other lovely suburbs to consider if the NorthEast location poses geographical difficulty for work or other reasons.
